Happy New Year!

The Portland Marathon Committee wishes each of you a very Happy New Year!

2011 will be a great year for our event as we now begin to celebrate the 40th Anniversary Year of the Portland Marathon.  This will mean even better things for our Marathon, the 2nd Portland Marathon Half, the 10K Family Walk as well as an expanded Kid's Run & Festival.  And, we will kick off a new event for Marathon Day: The Portland Marathon 10K Downhill Dash, a competitive run (more details on this fun event in future newsletters).

Register Now!

We hope everyone reading this newsletter will tell their friends to register early.  The Half will close on January 31st.  It then becomes a charity event.

As this is written there are less than 500 slots left in the Half Marathon and we know those will go fast as we get to mid month.  Remember, we sold out last year on January 20th.

The Marathon looks like it will sell out way faster this year as well.  At this point we are an amazing 1200% ahead of last year.   We know the great review we received in Runner's World is helping to speed the pace.  We just want to be sure all our former finishers, newletter friends and local runners and walkers take the opportunity to register now.

Our Military Finishers

On January 8th we were honored to have had the opportunity to present Finisher Medals, Finisher Shirts and other goodies to members of the 162nd Engineer Company of the Oregon National Guard.  This unit just recently returned from duty in Afghanistan. (See photos herein)

These troops ran at the exact same time as those in Portland.  But with the time difference they ran at night in dusty and hot conditions.  They laid out the full and half marathon courses at Camp Leatherneck in mid-central Afghanistan.  And, about 10 of the participants "rucked" the Half with a 35 to 50 pound packs!!

This October another ONG unit will be deployed to Afghanistan and we are already planning an event for them.  Many of those who have run our events in Iraq and Afghanistan in the last two years will be joining us this Fall for our 2011 Portland.  And, others from the various ONG units will be with us at the Expo and to help us on Marathon Day.

The 40th Celebration: Frank Shorter and Bill Rodgers

We are also pleased that both Frank Shorter and Bill Rodgers will be joining us as part of our 40th Anniversary.  Most know of these two legends of running.  Frank helped to spark the first Portland Marathon with his Munich Olympic Marathon Gold Medal in 1972.  Bill, who ran with us last year as part of the First Portland Marathon Half, was the winner of 4 Boston and 4 NY City Marathons back in the 70s.

Help us with History

We are also looking for any stories and history items that our readers may have or know about concerning the first five years of the event.  Contact us at info@portlandmarathon.org

The Portland Marathon would like to thank their official on-course drink sponsor... Ultima Replenisher.

There’s too much sugar in the leading sports drinks – 10 packs or more – and little nutritional value. No wonder so many athletes drink plain water. But our bodies need electrolytes before, during and after exercise. Ultima Replenisher is a natural sports drink with zero sugar. It contains a full complement of electrolytes, not just a ton of sodium. Ultima also contains complex carbs for energy, water-soluble vitamins and vitamin enhancers for day-to-day health maintenance, and antioxidants to protect body systems from free radicals (toxins). Ultima uses no artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners.

Top 10 Reasons:

9. NATURALLY sweet. NO ARTIFICIAL ingredients
8. Better choice than PEDIALYTE® & Gatorade®
7. VEGAN friendly – GLUTEN FREE
6. Rapid absorption – Speeds FLUIDS to muscle cells
5. ESTER C® Supports the Immune System
4. Better hydration = Faster METABOLISM
3. PREGNANCY – Before, during & after labor
2. Helps CANCER patients stay hydrated— Recommended by nutritionalists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
1. Perfect for any and everyone!

2011 Half Marathon

In your words…

A poem for a 10-10-10 participant

Running to, for, from, where?
Into misty darkness where shadows swirl
Bodies gathered, congregated, huddled, in rain pouring down
Garbage bag raincoat brigade rustled  impatiently awaiting the starting gun
Echoing loud speaker directs the throngs outside
The Star Spangle Banner sung bringing rustling mass to alerted pride
And then the gun fired and in slow motion the race begun
The rain sparkling in the street lamps, puddles of splashing feet
The sound of plastic bags swishing toward the starting line
Where orange circles on shoe laces marked time crossing the starting line
The mass slowly picked up speed faster and faster
Light gray awakened the morning with steady rain
Rolling Portland street a mass of  color emerged
As plastic bags were stripped, rainbow colors of running attire
A vibration, a tremor of movement along in narrow rolling streets
Masses turned into a long colorful snake slithering around
Past Taiko drummers drumming with grey morning light extinguishing street lamps
Down to the waterfront past fountains splashing up, rain ponding down
A stretching out of color slithering into the industrial quarter
Where the snake turned in on itself before turning off
Heading onward in its journey toward a suspension bridge ahead
Like an illusion, a destination, a calling
The slender snake rises through the misty expanse
With its striped back of arms and legs moving on and on
A quivering exhaustion of the slithering snake in time
Readying to shed its skin across the finish line
With a new skin handed over
Called the ‘Finisher’
The snake disappeared
