2007 will mark the fifth consecutive year Team Red Lizard (TRL), a local Portland Running club, has enthusiastically performed the pacing duties for the Portland Marathon. In the past TRL has offered pace groups for 3:00, 3:30, 4:00, and 4:30, and looks to expand the selection in 2007 with the addition of 3:10, 3:20, 3:40, 3:50 and other groups up to 5:00 groups. We are also working on putting together a group to pace our walkers. For final details be sure to consult the pacers at the Expo or during their informational session on Saturday before the race. Unique singlets and bright yellow pace numbers help to make the pacers easy to find. Dozens of runners have joined the lizards as they competed for their goal times.
Here is what one runner had to say after the pace setters:
Portland Marathon staff, Thank you so much for putting on another wonderful event. I truly had one of the best races ever. I was hoping you'd pass on a thank you to the Red Lizard (4 hour) pace team. They helped me achieve a PR by 10 minutes and pulled me along with their 4:00 yellow bibs on their backs. Please pass along a huge thank you!
Another runner, Tony Carpenter, sent his thanks along with a brief description of the last 50 yards of his marathon experience.
Thank you TRL
This is Tony Carpenter #1323 in the Portland Marathon. I'm trying to find out who helped me finish the marathon. Bib #99 I believe it was John Collins. He was 1/2 of the 4hr pace group with a red hat.
I finished in 4:00:59 but it would've been worse had John not helped me up off the pavement and walked with me to the finish after I my legs quit with 50yds to go.
TRL eagerly looks forward to the pacing challenges and triumphs that await us in 2007 and in the years to come.
