Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization committed to enhancing self-esteem and self-awareness among pre-teen girls (ages 8-11). Girls on the Run offers a 12-week after-school program every fall and spring. The curriculum focuses on strengthening the physical, mental, emotional and social pillars that are necessary for healthy living. The program culminates with a 5K walk/run, a community service project and an awards ceremony.
Girls on the Run touches on the following issues during lessons:
Girls on the Run International was started in August of 1996 to build self-esteem and respect within the pre-teen girl population by encouraging healthy, positive living. More than 140 programs now exist across the United States.
The Girls on the Run of Portland Metro chapter was started by Nancy Fleck and Nicole Cossette in the fall of 2007. More than 40 girls participated during the spring of 2008.
There are several opportunities to get involved with Girls on the Run. Both the fall and spring sessions are in need of coaches and assistant coaches, as well as event assistants and running buddies (who run a practice 5K and then a 5K race with the girls). For more information, visit www.girlsontherunpdx.org.
Team Tiara is another great opportunity for people to get involved with Girls on the Run. Participants pursue personal goals, whether it entails running a 5K or a marathon, while raising funds for Girls on the Run of Portland Metro.
There’s a $26 registration fee (plus the cost of entering the race), and all Team Tiara participants must raise a minimum of $262 within 30 days of completing the race.
Girls on the Run International provides online training tips, fundraising assistance through Active.com, and motivational communications. Team Tiara participants also receive additional support from Girls on the Run of Portland Metro.
